A LITTLE HISTORY

A PIONEERING HORSE TRACK

The Whitley Cottage is named for William Whitley, an early pioneer and settler in Lincoln County. William Whitley and his family built the first brick house in Kentucky outside of Stanford near what would later become Crab Orchard, Kentucky. The estate was named Sportsman’s Hill. The house still stands, preserved as the William Whitley House State Historic Site. The racetrack at Sportsman’s Hill set horse racing tradition by racing counterclockwise as opposed to the British clockwise tradition. It was also the first clay (instead of turf) track in the United States.
